Description

Although there is a willingness from most stake-holders (be it the general public, politicians, industry, and others) to develop renewable energy systems the pace is very slow compared to the increased demand of various energy services throughout the world. The globalized world needs an innovative paradigm shift in how energy resources are used. The SELECT+ programme is designed towards looking at the overall energy systems from an environomical pathway perspective, starting with the different primary energy sources (sun, moon, geothermal) available in the world and identifying the need for specific energy services in different regions in the world (electricity, heat, cooling, clean water). Students in this programme will receive a unique education related to the implementation of renewable energy sources in a “well to wheel” analysis from different perspectives, looking on technical components and systems, from a technical exergy perspective put in a social and humanitarian perspectives, while considering policy restrictions. Special emphasize is put on the innovative and entrepreneurial context and the possibility to implement the solutions into “real life problems”. The EMJD SELECT+ programme is built up around an innovative scheme called “Project/Product of the Year”. In this concept the core partners (university and industry) identify every year one or two products which all students in the SELECT+ programme will work on as a team during the next 4 years. Each student will be assigned a specific Work Package inside this overall project, and have two universities and one company as a base for the mobility. Each of these WP’s will have both an industrial and a strong research component. The students will have placements in 3 countries, around 12+ months in the company, working on solving the research issues involved in the project, and spend the rest at the time at the two base universities. The student team has a full reference group following up on the progress during the entire study time. Each company will, apart from the 10kEuro/year registration fee, fund the student during the placement in the industrial environment. Each student intake will start in a business incubator, in which the students will spend 1 month, receiving a basic training related to project planning, business models, entrepreneurship, as well as social connection for the 4 years team work coming up. During this 1st month they will also receive the basic technical briefing about the “product/project of the year”. During the rest of the time the students, as well as their academic and industrial supervisors, will work together inside the SELECT+ “virtual face-to-face incubator”, while they also follow the specially designed courses work (as identified in their respective “Individual Study Plans”) remotely while keeping direct contact with their team-colleagues and work virtually. They will also meet physically at the ECOS conference to go through the details of the work.
