The International Standard Classification of Education organises education in fields. ISCED refers to fields of education while higher education generally refers to fields of study.
There are in fact 25 fields of study organised in broad groups. Each group carries a number and this coding is used by UNESCO, OECD. the European Union's Eurostat and EU's national statistical agencies.
It is recommended by UNESCO that inter- or multi-disciplinary programmes should be classified according to a majority rule, i.e. in the field of study in which the students spend most of their time. Higher education considers this approach obsolete and most higher education systems now allow programmes to be classified in several of the fields.
