Description

FUSION-DC is a three-year Joint Doctoral Programme in nuclear fusion science and engineering offered by a consortium of 20 European partner institutions from 8 EU countries: 7 academic degree- awarding full partners plus 2 research institute full partners, and 11 associated partners (including the ITER Organization, Fusion for Energy (F4E) and the Fusion Education Network Association FUSENET), and 9 non-EU associated members from the ITER partner countries China, Japan, Russia and the USA. FUSION-DC provides a sustainable, integrated and coordinated education at the doctoral level in the framework of a worldwide network of excellence in magnetic confinement fusion (MCF).

The EU is world leader in the development of MCF as a sustainable energy source and FUSION-DC embraces most of the largest European fusion institutions. The FUSION-DC doctoral programme involves an attractive variety of educational and training activities (among which the yearly PhD event) and an unsurpassed diversity of research opportunities at the partner institutions and research facilities. FUSION-DC focuses on a number of research fields that address the major remaining challenges for making fusion energy a reality, with an emphasis on next-step devices (ITER, W7-X, DEMO) and reactor aspects. Based on existing European research and education networks (including two doctoral networks and the FUSENET Association), the FUSION-DC programme is organized in a fully structured and integrated way concerning application and selection, harmonized training and research activities and examination. The language of instruction is English.

FUSION-DC involves a pronounced mobility component, with students spending training/research periods of at least 6 months in at least 2 partner institutions in different countries of the consortium (co-tutelle). FUSION-DC doctoral candidates will be involved in several common activities, handing them opportunities for networking with other doctoral candidates, alumni, other academia, research organizations and industry (e.g. regarding career opportunities). Participation in international conferences and scientific publication will be required and stimulated. The programme is not only intended for the training of a new generation of fusion scientists and engineers, but is also sufficiently broad in terms of transferable skills and involvement of adjacent scientific fields and technologies in order to be valuable outside fusion research as well. A double/multiple or joint doctoral degree is delivered by the universities where the students enrol. Joint governance of the FUSION-DC programme is guaranteed by the steering committee, the scientific board, and the strategic advisory board and quality is assured externally.
