Description of the agency
Evaluation and accreditation in teaching and learning, higher education governance and management are ZEvA’s main fields of activity. Since 1995 ZEvA has also been active in the field of quality assurance in higher education, on which it successfully cooperated with higher education institutions in Germany, Europe and beyond. Transparency, reliable procedures, comprehensive professional support and high competence in the evaluation of teaching, learning and quality assurance contribute to the high quality of ZEvA’s evaluation procedures.
The history of the agency
ZEvA was established in 1995 as the Central Evaluation Agency of the Universities of Lower Saxony. The geographical area covered by the ZEvA has been expanded beyond the borders of Lower Saxony since then. Departments for programme and system accreditation were set up in 1998. The European Institute for Quality Assurance (EIQA) was established in 2002 as a supporting association; it cooperates with ZEvA in affairs relating to accreditation and certification.
ZEvA has the legal form of a charitable foundation under civil law. The Foundation Board consists of seven experts on quality assurance in higher education. Three members are appointed by the state conference of higher education institutions (LHK) in Lower Saxony; three members are appointed by EIQA on the basis of recommendations by a selection panel; one member is appointed by the State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. The selection panel is formed by the chairpersons of LHK and EIQA and the Academic Director of ZEvA. The Board of Directors consists of the Managing Director and the Academic Director, both of whom are appointed by the Foundation Board for 5 years.
