Over the past 25 years the international dimension of higher education in Europe has become more important for governments, higher education institutions and accreditation bodies. Internationalisation itself is even perceived as an indicator for the quality of higher education, but how can you demonstrate the quality of your internationalisation?
An assessment gives higher education programmes and institutions insight into their performance in the domain of internationalisation and provides them with relevant recommendations for improvements. Undergoing such an assessment strengthens the quality of the debate on internationalisation within the institution, provides measures for greater coherence and complements internal assumptions with an external outlook of critical friends.
The award of the ECA Certificate for Quality in Internationalisation confirms that a programme or an institution has successfully incorporated an international and intercultural dimension into the purpose, function and delivery of its education. As the assessment is carried out by independent and esteemed experts under the coordination of one of ECA’s member agencies, a positive outcome testifies to the quality of internationalisation of the programme or institution assessed. Additional assurance is being provided by the ECA Certification Group which checks the methodological soundness of each assessment procedure before awarding the ECA Certificate. As a consequence the ECA Certificate rewards quality in internationalisation based on a sound and rigorous methodology. The ECA Certificate is thus an useful tool for promotion and branding, and can contribute to attracting foreign students and building partnerships with institutions abroad.
